Characteristics of Great Health Care Professionals

In the healthcare field, graduating at the top of your class won’t necessarily make you a proficient physician, nurse, or support worker. Medical professionals also rank such qualities as communication, emotional stability, interpersonal skills, and respect for others as vital to performance.

- Interact Well with Patients and Family
Display empathetic behavior and communicate well during interactions with patients and family members

Work in a team environment and help others, and engage in behaviors that benefit the team
- Technical Knowledge and Skill
Demonstrate an understanding of medical knowledge and skills appropriate to medical students, and know when to request assistance or supervision
- Display Extra Effort and Motivation
Take actions that demonstrate motivation and conscientiousness, and exhibit leadership
- Demonstrate Ethical Behavior
Display honesty, integrity, and personal responsibility while adhering to formal and informal medical ethical codes and norms, and respond to others’ unethical behavior
There is a longstanding myth that it’s not possible to develop essential qualities and character traits in people—the kind that can drive peak performance, improve corporate culture and employee engagement, and reduce safety risks and turnover.
